Introduction
About a year earlier (April 2017) I spent two weeks making improvised field recordings—inside the house, outside on the deck, and around the canyon. “Be a Tree” was played on the front deck in Spearfish Canyon. You can hear birds, the wind in a tall oak and a couple of spruce, and a little of Spearfish Creek below. After I finished the take and listened back, the piece named itself: it felt like what it would be to stand in place, swayed by wind, creek below, arms open for birds. That’s all the “story,” because the piece is simply listening to place and letting your body mirror it.
