Lyrics

Verse 1 Worked all day with a shovel and pen, Gave my best to the world again, By sundown, bones feel through, But there’s still one thing left to do. Chorus Gotta feed myself too, somehow, Can’t pour forever and don’t know how, A tune, a line, a moment true, That’s the bread I’m livin’ on too. Verse 2 Some folks say, “Why sing at all? There’s hungry mouths and a long night’s fall,” But a song can warm what soup can’t reach, Keeps the heart from rustin’ shut like a gate. Chorus Gotta feed myself too, tonight, Even the candle needs its light, If I’m to stand when the morning’s new, I gotta feed myself too.

Song story & origins

Scott asked a question that can trouble anybody who spends much time making songs: with people hungry and hurting, should he put down the pencil and go do something more useful? Mark pointed out that there are only so many hours and so much energy to go around. Then Amy reminded them that the person doing the giving needs feeding, too. Making something can help keep you alive inside. The song began there, with a little permission to tend the part of yourself that helps you keep showing up.
