Lyrics

Verse 1 When the night won’t let you rest And the world’s gone off the rails When the voices all grow louder And the better angels fail Verse 2 When your heart feels like a stranger And your hope has come undone There’s a quiet kind of courage In the work that’s never done Chorus Learn something Let it carry you through When the world breaks open Let it open you too Learn something Verse 3 Not to conquer, not to claim Not to fix what can’t be named Just to follow one small thread Through the darkness and the dread Chorus (Lifted) Learn something It will steady your hand There’s a light in the asking You don’t need to understand Just learn Outro (Spoken/Sung Softly) Look what there is to know…

Song story & origins

Toward the end of their conversation, Mark brought out a favorite passage from T. H. White’s The Once and Future King. Merlin is telling young Arthur what to do when sadness settles in: learn something. Mark loved that the advice made room for how hard life can be. It began with sorrow and still offered somewhere to go. That reading gave the closing song its beginning—a quiet invitation to find something worth wondering about when the world has worn you down.
