Lyrics

Verse 1 Met a man with a shining grin Said, “Follow me, I’ll show you how” But the road he walked was worn too thin And I turned around somehow Verse 2 Met another who spoke so loud Like he owned the truth outright But his shadow stretched across the ground And it didn’t look like light Chorus They were road signs, road signs Pointing where not to go And I thank them just the same For the things they didn’t know Verse 3 You can learn from saints and sinners both If you keep your eyes awake Sometimes wisdom comes wrapped in Every wrong turn that you take Chorus They were road signs, road signs Pointing where not to go And I thank them just the same For the things they didn’t know

Song story & origins

Scott was remembering teachers who hadn’t done him much good at the time. Years later, working with teachers himself, he could at least say he knew a few things that didn’t work. Mark knew the feeling. Some mentors seemed to beckon him forward; others looked more like warning signs beside the road. You could learn from either kind. That was the thought this song picked up: sometimes a person helps you find your way by showing you a direction you’d rather not go.
