Lyrics

Verse 1 They said, “That tune’s as clean as spring, But I don’t hear your heart in the strings.” I smiled and shrugged, said, “Maybe true,” Been singin’ sharp when I should be blue. Chorus That wasn’t me, but it sounded good, Smooth like stone from the preacher’s wood, Now I’m reachin’ back with a busted key, Tryin’ to find the song that sounds like me. Verse 2 Spent two years hidin’ in a borrowed style, Learned the tricks, forgot to smile. Now the holler calls with a scratchy tone, And the song I lost might still come home. Chorus That wasn’t me, but it passed the test, Kept me warm and gave me rest, But I’d trade it all for a crooked chord That echoes the man my voice ignored.

Song story & origins

Mark opened the episode with an observation about the songs they’d just made: they sounded good, but the fellow singing didn’t sound like Scott. Fair enough. Scott had been trying out AI music tools, seeing what they could do and thinking through what that meant for his work. Mark’s remark put a very human question in the middle of all that experimenting. You might like what comes out of the speakers and still wonder where you went. That small exchange was enough to get this song started.
