Lyrics

Verse 1 Don’t dress me up in borrowed fear, I been alive a long good year, I seen the sun rise soft and fast, I ain’t afraid of what comes past. Chorus The next thing happens, just like before, One step opens another door, Lay me down, don’t make it grand, I been held by a steady hand. Verse 2 I don’t know where the road turns round, Or if there’s silence, song, or ground, But I know this breath, I know this name, And love don’t vanish in the flame. Chorus The next thing happens, calm and plain, Like winter easing back to rain, If I go quiet, don’t be sad, I had my turn—and it was glad.

Song story & origins

Amy said that facing cancer had often meant dealing with the next practical thing: make the appointment, go to the doctor, take another step. She was learning to let some things remain unresolved. Mark, who had never much trusted tidy endings in stories, recognized something in that. Even at the place we call an ending, something else happens. Their talk about death and the unknown gave this song its quiet footing. It doesn’t try to see all the way down the road. It stays with the next step.
