Lyrics

Verse 1 Caught a ride on a dusty lane, Boots wore thin from the walkin’ pain, Driver said, “You look near done,” I said, “Just need a ride ‘til I see the sun.” Chorus They didn’t eat me, they gave me stew, Let me warm my hands and change my view, Folks on the road, just tryin’ to get by, Don’t want much—just a clearer sky. Verse 2 I’ve picked up strangers with tired eyes, Not one of ‘em wore a disguise, They told me tales from behind their wheels, More truth there than a Sunday meal. Chorus They didn’t eat me, they shared their song, Said, “Stay safe, friend,” and rolled along, The world’s not kind, but it ain’t all cruel— Sometimes the road still follows a rule.

Song story & origins

Mark had picked up hitchhikers and caught rides himself, and he had a plain, slightly ridiculous question about all those strangers: did they eat him? They did not. Mostly, they were people trying to get down the road. The joke opened onto something serious—how the stories we hear can teach us to fear people we’ve never met, and how meeting them can change the story. This song came out of those ordinary rides, with room for a laugh and a little more trust in the next person.
