Bed Sheet Litany
My bed sheets are too short
they leave my deepest
thoughts exposed to the night air.
My bed sheets are purple when
I dream... when I wake they are
always slipping over the
ultraviolet edge of my memory.
My bed sheets welcome strangers
who bring warm gifts or
lightly chilled covered salads.
My bed sheets are like waves---
each trough acts as a
convex lens, each crest,
a telescope set on heaven.
My bed sheets filter the starlight,
letting only the dying bursts
from distant supernovas
attend my twitching eyelids.
I was happy with my bed sheets
until they joined the afghan
and slid out the window onto the
rain gutter and into oblivion.
