early april west of sundance
the hills shake out into rolling
plains
the bluestem and sage
mottled, patchy
as a bison's spring coat
to the north
Devil's Tower props open
the storm front
a tent pole
jagged darker clouds
sagging, full
…ten to twelve inches tonight,
Gillette to Rapid City…
and the waiting will recommence
the watching
the sluggish magic of soil appearing
out of thin ice
