Start Again
I asked her once, “What happens
when you lose everything?”
She looked out across the dry fields,
remembering drought, remembering
dust.
“Well, Sharla,” she said, “We start
over again. And it’ll be okay,
because we trust and have faith
that it will.”
It was dusk. The step
was warm beneath us. She
wasn’t just telling a story.
She was handing me a tool.
