Terra and Luna
Two poems beginning with lines by Robert Bly
1
The great wheel turns around into black,
her purple profile
she turns her face from us
hides her frown, a thin Euphrates
droughted to dust
we suck dry wineskins
communion bitter as dirt
and she is always turning away
upon her axis, while in the still center
her aurora blooms
as we go down to sleep
2
Water kneeling in the moonlight
slips around the knee of stone
an icy calf dipping toes
toward a dark pool
translucent tonight
our prayers are pure diamonds
swirling in darkness so slowly
they appear changeless
the moon is warm as desert stone
as a child's face
as we bend our knees
in supplication, fears released: gems to
break up the night sky
