Poem segment 1
II. Negotiation
Most interpretations
arrive already finished.
You walk into a room.
Someone fails to meet your eyes.
Immediately
the story assembles itself.
They’re angry.
You’ve done something wrong.
Distance enters the air
before a word is spoken.
But underneath that quick conclusion
a quieter process is moving.
Memory offering old evidence.
Fear selecting details.
Pride editing the scene.
Different voices
arguing beneath the floorboards.
Usually
we only hear the verdict.
Rarely the negotiation.
Attention changes that.
Not by solving it—
only by slowing it down
enough to watch meaning forming
while it forms.
Like seeing frost spread
across a windowpane
instead of finding it already there.
